Fruit Values and ORAC Score.

To achieve optimum health, USDA recommends an intake of 5,000 ORAC units per day. (ORAC is an acronym that stands for 'oxygen radical absorbance capacity.' Berries have some of the highest ORAC values of fruits).  Daily food consumption for an average person attains only about 20% to 30% of this recommendation. This means a lot more of foods with good ORAC scores like fruits and vegetables must be included in one's daily food intake.

The ORAC Value or Score was developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health. While the exact relationship between the ORAC value of a food and its health benefit has not been fully established, it is believed that foods higher on the ORAC scale will more effectively neutralize free radicals. According to the free-radical theory of aging, this will slow the oxidative processes and free radical damage that can contribute to age-related degeneration and disease.
